SOS Signs of Suicide, a service of Riverside Community Care and a national leader in suicide prevention education, has launched a groundbreaking research initiative focused on the mental health needs of men working in some of the nation’s most high‑risk industries: fishing, construction, and mining. This social‑impact project is made possible through a generous contribution from men’s care company Harry’s, extending its long-standing partnership with SOS Signs of Suicide and shared commitment to improving men’s mental health.
Workers in these fields face disproportionately high rates of suicide, substance use, and other behavioral health challenges. Commercial fishing remains one of the most dangerous occupations in the United States. In construction, the suicide rate is four times the national average. Mining has the highest rate of heavy alcohol use across all industries. Yet these communities remain historically underserved and difficult to reach.
This research program seeks to change that - by listening closely to workers, identifying their most pressing needs, and developing practical, culturally responsive solutions that can make a real difference in their lives.
